If you’ve been paying attention, and I hope so, following me on social media, or..
better yet–have purchased and enjoyed reading my second Doodles and Molly book,
“The Curious Blue Door,” then you’ve met their two adventurous penguin friends,
Fred and Alice.
Since introducing them, I’ve discovered that we’re all curious, fascinated, entertained,
and love penguins…but few of us actually know much about them!
The more I learned, the more interested I became. Penguins are funny, loyal,
incredibily resilient, and full of surprises!
Recently, I discovered an engaging story about penguins titled: ‘Really Cool Things about Penguins.’
I think you’ll be amazed by Fred and Alice’s real life relatives, and appreciate why they became
such important characters in “The Curious Blue Door.” Their courage, friendship, curiosity,
and determination, remind us how a good friend can help us find the way!

Really Cool Things about Penguins…

Birds that can’t Fly (But Swim like Torpedoes)...

Penguins are birds, but instead of wings for flying, they evolved flippers that
let them glide through water at speeds up to 15 mph.

Their black-and-white coloring is called ‘countershading camouflage’: From
above, their dark backs blend with the ocean depths, and from below, their
white bellies blend with the bright surface.

Superb Divers…

Emperor penguins can dive over 1,800 feet deep and hold their breath for
more than 20 minutes. That’s deeper and longer than most whales!

Waddle and Toboggan…
On land, penguins waddle. But on ice, they love to slide on their bellies,
pushing forward with their flippers and feet. It saves energy–and looks like pure fun!

Warm in the Freezing Cold…

They have layers of fat (blubber) and tightly packed waterproof feathers to
keep them warm in icy Antarctic waters…

Dedicated Parents…

Most species share parenting duties–taking turns keeping the egg warm
and feeding the chick. In Emperor penguins, dads go two months without
eating while cradling the egg!

Big Communities…

Colonies can number in the tens of thousands, filling beaches and ice with
non-stop chatter and activity…

Vertical Limits…

Emperor penguins can climb steep ice cliffs and have been known to breed
up on ice-shalves, even if the sea ice below fails.
