Explore the Magic – Creating the story of Doodles & Molly…

‘How it all began…’
Writing a children’s book sounds simple enough at first glance – after all, it’s only two dozen pages or so, right? But, oh, how wonderfully layered and daunting, the creative process turned out to be.
What inspired the name, ‘Doodles’?
When I was a boy, I was fascinated by the humor, quick wit, and playful storytelling of ‘Doodles Weaver.’ He was a character actor and comedian with a gift for weaving stories full of funny voices, sound effects, and lighthearted mischief. That shouldn’t surprise many of you, since I’ve had an instinct for humor, storytelling, and lighthearted mischief since I was a boy. It’s just part of who I am.
So, Doodles was the perfect name for the curious, problem-solving, lovable, and adventurous character I wanted to create – but where to start? Developing the character and personality of Doodles was a process, and evolved over time. He began as a sepia colored round soft character with a whimsical charm. His shape was slightly odd or ‘doodly’, making him look like he’s been sketched to life- tying in with his playful and curious nature.
Now we need a new best friend for Doodles, who has a big heart, quick thinking, loves creating stories, and imagining new worlds. She will teach kids about friendship, kindness, encouraging curiosity, and looking closer at the world’s small wonders.
Like Doodles, her identity began as a cute little sepia toned character. My wife, Linda, looked at her and said, “You should call her “Molly.” “That’s perfect,” I said. Once again, Linda comes to my rescue.
‘Where the magic happens…’
Creating, writing, and illustrating an engaging children’s book is always a collective effort, and my friend and illustrator, David Nessl, provided the artistic vision and innovative spirit that help shape Doodles & Molly. Working closely with me, David brought these ever-curious, creative, and lovable characters to life – from their cheerful personalities and delightful outfits, engaging smiles, and the magical places and vibrant scenes of forests, flowers, birds, and animals, that set the mood for where they first met – became the best of friends, and for the entire book.
David’s talent made this story shine – and made me look good too! He’s a brilliant artist, with a willingness to collaborate and develop every detail together. That made this story so special.
‘Where Curiosity and Creativity meet Adventure…’
The magic in a children’s book lies in the ability to say so much with so little. This meant writing, rewriting, and rewriting some more. Sometimes, just changing a few words provided the perfect rhythm and tone we were looking for.
Patience and perseverance became close companions on this journey. Brainstorming sessions where inspiration and imagination usually provided the solutions to our questions.
‘Explore the Magic…’
Creating this book has been a journey of love, laughter, and learning. Lots of learning!
“The Delightful and Amusing Adventures of Doodles and Molly” began as an interesting idea, but rapidly grew into a warmhearted story about friendship, laughter, curiosity, the joy of problem-solving, and the power of friendship!
