“Addicted to Joy” is a ‘Message Movie’ with International appeal, that Showcases the “Spirit and Soul” of surfing’s colorful heritage, and the remarkable people that shaped the “Soul of Surfing, and Surf Culture.”

-Stories about the ‘Heart,’ and the ‘Heart’ drives a lot of things…

-A film that embraces ‘All Cultures,’ and ‘Every Generation.’

-An indispensable asset of American Culture…

Discover the evolution of “Surfing and Surf Culture”..

Riding waves on a wooden board dates back to the 12th century Polynesians… When they arrived in the Hawaiian Islands in the 5th century AD, they brought their traditions with them.

In Hawaii, surfing, wave sliding, or he’e nalu, was The Sport of Kings, and was for royalty only. There was a societal and spiritual meaning to the people, making it immensely important to their culture..

Royalty surfed with ‘Olo’ boards, that were long and narrow, reaching lengths of 18-20 feet. The ‘alaia’ boards were short and were for the commoners. Surfboards were made out of koa, ulu, and willi-willi (Hawaiian balsa wood.)

An industry was born that grew up in garages and backyards.

We honor these people, and their Shared Stories…

Their stories and that history are about the “Human Element,” and the “Human Spirit. They were free to do what they loved.

Featuring in-depth, personal, respectful, and unrestricted interviews, and support imagery. They shared a deep respect for each other, for nature and for the ocean.

Celebrated surfing legend, Billy Hamilton told us, “Back then, we were looked as bums, because we were just too free. We had a license to fly, and we did.”

Australia’s surfing luminary, Wayne Lynch said, “It’s all about relationships at all levels, and an amazing cultural connection, with depth, with meaning, and with continuity”

“If you don’t know your history, and don’t understand your culture, you wind up with chaos..”

Film’s Featured Legends

Meet the legendary surfers and preeminent craftsmen that dedicated their lives to be free and happy. We filmed and interviewed over 35 of these remarkable people.

The interviews are honest, in-depth, and passionate. They were the authors of the evolution of “Surfing and Surf Culture,” in the ocean, and in the natural world…

Joyce Hoffman

First female international surfing star. first female to be sponsored. Hoffman dominated women’s surfing during the 60s. Joyce trained religously, and expected to win every surf contest she entered. Hobie Alter designed her own signature surfboard model – the first ever for a female surfer…

Wayne Lynch

Celebrated Australian surfer and shaper. – Wayne was a key figure in the ‘shortboard revolution during the 1960s, early 70s, and beyond. Surfboards went from the majestic 10 foot boards to the full-bore creative, and highly maneuverable 7 foot boards. He told us, “I don‘t see surfing as a sport at all, I see it as a way of life.”

Paul Strauch

Hawaiian born, champion longboard surfer in the 60s. Paul developed a nose riding stance for larger waves, known as “The Cheater Five.” The rider squats down over the back foot, while extending the front foot towards the nose.
Paul was also a member of Duke Kahanamoku’s Surf Team. He was inducted into the “Surf Walk Hall of Fame in 2015.

Bill Hamilton

Master surfer and shaper – Bill started surfing in 1959 at Dana Point Harbor. With surfing, as with many things in life, style is everything, and Bill had style, and aka, “The Jesus of Cool.” In 1976, he was chosen to do the surfing for Jan Michael Vincent’s character in the celebrated film, “Big Wednesday.”

Darrick Doerner

One of the true spirits, and pioneers of Big Wave Tow-in surfing at Waimea Bay, Oahu, Hawaii. He lives on the North Shore of Oahu, and continues to be an extreme wave rider, and serves on the Hawaiian Water Patrol. Darrick said,
“You have to put your time in to feel the magic. Mother Nature is all about freedom, and I got to compete with Mother Nature.”

Gerry Lopez

Hawaiian-born Master Surfer and surf board builder. Gerry is often referred to as, “Mr. Pipeline,” because his smooth and graceful riding was in contrast with those powerful waves of The Pipeline. He also serves as an ‘Ocean Ambassador’ for Patagonia. Recently, Gerry said, “For me, it was always about the wave. You need to respect the energy in the wave. If you don’t, you get spanked – hard and quickly.”
